Description
Created by goldsmiths in the 1st century BC, the Broighter Boat was most likely a votive offering to the sea god Manannán Mac Lir. It was found on the shores of Lough Foyle in 1896 by two men working in a field. When the plough struck something hard, they carried the muddy bundle indoors where it was washed and revealed to be a golden horde consisting of a bowl, a torc, various jewellery and the exquisite boat, just 20cm long and beautifully detailed.
